Chapter 8 — Daniel Learns That “Sorry” Doesn’t Reset Everything
Daniel let go of the box.
“Okay.”
Ethan carried it toward the garage door.
Claire watched him leave.
Then looked toward Daniel.
“Don’t chase him.”
Daniel sighed.
“I wasn’t going to.”
Claire raised an eyebrow.
“You absolutely were.”
Daniel looked toward the closed door.
“I apologized.”
“You did.”
“And I meant it.”
“I know.”
Claire continued.
“That doesn’t mean Ethan has to become fine immediately.”
Daniel nodded.
He understood in theory.
Living it was harder.
He hated knowing his son had looked him in the eye and told the truth…
and Daniel had treated that truth like an excuse.
Claire began folding the keep pile.
“You know what bothered him most?”
Daniel looked toward her.
“That I accused him.”
“More specific.”
Daniel waited.
Claire said:
“You didn’t ask what he was doing.”
“Your first question sounded like a question, but you had already decided the answer.”
Daniel remembered.
“What are you doing with all of this?”
Then almost immediately:
“Were you going to sell this stuff?”
He had not been gathering information.
He had been building a case.
Daniel sat down.
“So what do I do?”
Claire answered:
“Next time, actually ask.”
“And listen long enough for the answer to surprise you.”
Daniel smiled faintly.
“That sounds suspiciously simple.”
“It usually is.”
The next afternoon, Ethan returned from school looking worried.
Daniel immediately noticed.
A large paper bag was tucked under Ethan’s arm.
Daniel almost asked:
“What did you bring home now?”
Then stopped himself.
Instead he asked:
“What’s in the bag?”
Ethan looked toward him.
And Daniel was about to get his first real chance to prove he had learned the difference.
