Ethan Was Accused of Taking Clothes Without Permission — Then the Garage Camera Showed Who Had Put Them There Before He Ever Touched the Box
Chapter 7 — The Note in Daniel’s Coat Pocket
Daniel unfolded the paper.
It was in Ethan’s handwriting.
DAD — ASK BEFORE DONATING THIS. IF YOU DON’T WANT IT, CAN I TAKE IT TO THE DRIVE? IT’S REALLY WARM AND THEY NEED BIGGER COATS.
Daniel stared.
“You wrote this?”
Ethan nodded.
“I was going to leave it on your desk if you weren’t home.”
Daniel looked at the coat.
He had not worn it in almost three winters.
It was heavy.
Warm.
Still in good condition.
Daniel had kept it simply because he never got around to deciding what to do with it.
Ethan had not treated it as his to give away.
He had written a note asking.
Daniel looked toward his son.
The evidence was becoming almost painfully repetitive.
At every point where Ethan could have acted without permission, he had tried not to.
He separated uncertain items.
Made a checklist.
Recognized Jason’s clothes.
Wrote Daniel a note.
And still Daniel’s first assumption had been theft.
“You can donate the coat,” Daniel said.
Ethan looked surprised.
“Really?”
“Yeah.”
Daniel smiled faintly.
“Apparently somebody might actually use it instead of letting it live in our garage for another three years.”
Claire added several sweaters she no longer wore.
Ethan sorted his own clothes.
Then Daniel picked up a nearly new pair of boots.
“Whose?”
Claire looked at them.
“Yours.”
Daniel frowned.
“I don’t remember these.”
Ethan laughed.
“That’s probably a strong argument for donating them.”
Daniel smiled.
“Fair.”
By the end, they had three piles.
KEEP.
DONATE.
ASK OWNER.
Then Ethan picked up the box of approved donations.
Daniel reached for the other side.
“I’ll help you carry it.”
Ethan hesitated.
Then shook his head.
“I can do it.”
Daniel stopped.
It was a small response.
But he understood what it meant.
Ethan was not ready to turn the argument into a cheerful father-son donation trip yet.
