Chapter 6 — “Would You Have Believed Me Without the Camera?”
The garage became quiet.
Daniel finally answered.
“Maybe not immediately.”
Ethan looked away.
Daniel continued.
“And that’s a problem.”
Claire said nothing.
She wanted Daniel to finish.
He sat beside Ethan.
“I saw something that looked suspicious.”
“Then I decided I understood it before I heard you.”
Ethan nodded.
Daniel looked toward the box.
“You were handling my coat.”
“That was true.”
“But I turned that into ‘you stole my coat.’”
“Those aren’t the same thing.”
Ethan’s expression softened slightly.
Daniel continued.
“The camera didn’t make you truthful.”
“It showed me I hadn’t listened.”
Ethan looked toward him.
“Then why did you get so mad?”
Daniel thought before answering.
There had been an incident several months earlier.
Ethan had borrowed Daniel’s headphones without asking.
He returned them later.
Nothing terrible happened.
But Daniel remembered the argument.
“I think I saw this and connected it to that.”
Ethan frowned.
“So because I borrowed headphones once, you thought I’d steal a box of clothes?”
Daniel winced.
“When you put it that way…”
Claire raised an eyebrow.
“There isn’t a better way to put it.”
Daniel nodded.
“You’re right.”
He looked toward Ethan again.
“One thing you did before shouldn’t become proof that you did something completely different now.”
Ethan stayed quiet.
Then Daniel said:
“I’m sorry.”
Ethan nodded, but did not immediately say it was okay.
Daniel accepted that.
Then Claire picked up the donation checklist.
“We should finish this properly.”
She pointed toward the clothes.
“Everyone decides what belongs to them.”
“Then Ethan can take only the items people actually agree to donate.”
Ethan nodded.
But as they began sorting, Daniel found something hidden inside one of his old coat pockets.
A folded note.
And it revealed that Ethan had planned an entirely different surprise for Daniel before the argument began.
