Ethan Was Accused of Taking Clothes Without Permission — Then the Garage Camera Showed Who Had Put Them There Before He Ever Touched the Box

Chapter 3 — The School Clothing Drive

Ethan sat on the edge of the workbench.

“Our student council is collecting winter clothes.”

Claire nodded slowly.

“For the community center?”

“Yes.”

His school had started a winter clothing drive for families using the local community center.

Coats.

Sweaters.

Gloves.

Clean shoes.

Anything in good condition.

Ethan had volunteered to help organize donations.

“Why didn’t you just ask us?” Daniel said.

“I was going to.”

Daniel frowned.

Ethan pointed toward Claire’s note.

“Mom already made a donation pile.”

“I thought these were the things everyone had decided they didn’t want.”

Claire immediately said:

“No.”

“I hadn’t asked everyone yet.”

Ethan nodded.

“I know that now.”

Daniel crossed his arms.

“So you were going to take them anyway.”

Ethan shook his head.

“No.”

Then he reached into his backpack.

He pulled out a sheet of paper.

Across the top:

HOUSEHOLD DONATION CHECKLIST

Several items were listed.

Dad’s blue coat — ask.

Mom’s green sweater — ask.

Old jeans — ask whose.

Shoes — check sizes / owner.

Daniel stared.

Ethan had not been preparing to leave with the box.

He had been sorting everything first.

“Then why was it already packed?”

Ethan looked toward the garage door.

“Because the stuff that was definitely mine was at the bottom.”

He began removing clothing from the box.

Several T-shirts.

A hoodie.

Two pairs of jeans.

All Ethan’s.

Then he pointed toward Daniel’s coat.

“I had just picked yours up to check whether you still wanted it when you walked in.”

Daniel looked down.

The scene he thought he had understood had actually been frozen halfway through Ethan’s sorting process.

Then Claire noticed another sheet of paper beneath the box.

It was a printed email.

And when Daniel read it, he realized Ethan’s reason for caring so much about the clothing drive was far more personal than either parent knew.
