Daniel Played the Recorder Sophie Found — Then Vanessa Mentioned a Suitcase Hidden Upstairs
Chapter 1 — The Tiny Black Recorder
Daniel heard Sophie crying before he had even taken off his coat.
He hurried into the kitchen.
His seven-year-old daughter stood beside the counter with tears running down her cheeks.
The moment she saw him, she ran into his arms.
“Daddy.”
Daniel held her tightly.
“What happened?”
Before Sophie could answer, Vanessa stepped forward.
“She stole money from me.”
Daniel looked up.
“What?”
“Two hundred dollars disappeared from my purse.”
Vanessa pointed toward Sophie.
“I found it in her bedroom.”
Sophie immediately shook her head.
“I didn’t take it.”
Vanessa sighed.
“She’s been saying that for twenty minutes.”
Daniel crouched beside his daughter.
“Sophie, look at me.”
She did.
“Did you take Vanessa’s money?”
“No.”
“Do you know how it got into your room?”
Sophie hesitated.
Then she looked toward the kitchen counter.
A tiny black recorder was lying beside the fruit bowl.
She pointed at it.
Vanessa’s expression changed immediately.
Daniel noticed.
He reached for the recorder.
“What’s this?”
Vanessa stepped closer.
“It’s nothing.”
Sophie grabbed Daniel’s sleeve.
“Play it.”
Daniel pressed the button.
Static filled the kitchen.
Then a woman’s voice came through the speaker.
Vanessa’s voice.
“I’ll put the money there…”
Daniel slowly looked at her.
The recording continued.
A man’s voice answered, too faint to recognize.
Then Vanessa spoke again.
“He’ll believe…”
A few seconds of rustling.
Then:
“…the suitcase upstairs.”
Daniel froze.
Vanessa’s face went completely pale.
He looked toward the staircase.
“What suitcase?”
“Daniel…”
He stood.
“What’s inside the suitcase upstairs?”
Vanessa reached toward the recorder.
“Give me that.”
Daniel closed his hand around it.
“No.”
Then Sophie whispered something that made him look at her again.
“It’s under your bed.”
