Mia Was Blamed for Taking Something From Aunt Rebecca’s Package — Then the Porch Camera Showed Who Really Reached Into the Box
Chapter 1 — The Hand in the Box
Mia stood on the front porch with tears running down her cheeks.
Beside her, Aunt Rebecca searched frantically through a large cardboard box.
Bubble wrap covered the porch floor.
Old photographs.
Books.
A folded tablecloth.
Several small wrapped packages.
Rebecca lifted everything twice.
“It’s not here.”
Lauren stood near the doorway.
“What’s missing?”
Rebecca looked toward Mia.
“The silver medal.”
Mia immediately shook her head.
“I didn’t take it.”
Rebecca crouched.
“Mia, you were playing beside this box.”
“I didn’t take anything.”
“Did you open one of the little packages?”
“No.”
Lauren stepped closer.
“Rebecca, stop.”
“I’m just asking.”
“She’s crying.”
Rebecca looked frustrated.
The box had arrived that morning from their late grandfather Edward’s former house.
After the property was finally cleared, several personal belongings were divided among the family.
Rebecca had specifically requested Edward’s old military medal.
The estate inventory said it was inside.
Now it wasn’t.
Then Lauren looked toward the small camera above the porch light.
“We can just check the recording.”
Mia wiped her eyes.
Lauren pulled out her phone.
The footage showed the delivery driver leaving the box.
Ten minutes later, Mia walked onto the porch.
She sat beside the package drawing with sidewalk chalk.
She never opened it.
Rebecca’s expression began to change.
Then another adult walked into frame.
Lauren leaned closer.
“Wait.”
The man stopped beside the package.
He looked toward the house.
Then opened the top flap.
Rebecca stared at the screen.
“Go back.”
Lauren rewound.
This time they saw his hand clearly.
He reached inside.
Removed a small blue velvet case.
Then slipped it into his coat.
Mia had been standing only several feet away.
The man said something to her.
Then walked off the porch.
Lauren paused on his face.
Rebecca went completely pale.
“You know him?” Lauren asked.
Rebecca whispered:
“That’s Mr. Ellis.”
Lauren frowned.
“Grandpa’s old neighbor?”
Rebecca nodded.
Then Mia said quietly:
“He told me the medal was his.”
