Jordan diverts household funds to stop an emergency eviction — Then Clara discovers the hidden transaction that drains their own daughter’s tuition account
Chapter 1 — Rent Past Due Notice Discovered in Kitchen
Clara stood by the kitchen island, her fingers tearing open the heavy paper envelope.
The bold lettering on the official notice stared back at her from the kitchen counter.
Rent Past Due.
Her red hair fell over her shoulder as she leaned closer to read the printed figures.
Her green cardigan tightened around her arms as she drew in a sharp breath.
The balance listed on the page was not a minor oversight.
It was the entire month’s rent, plus late fees.
Footsteps echoed against the tile floor as Jordan walked into the kitchen.
He wore a dark blue shirt and khaki pants, his shoulders visibly slumped.
Jordan rubbed the back of his neck, refusing to meet her gaze.
Clara held the paper up, her hand shaking slightly with sudden panic.
“Jordan, what is this?” she asked.
Jordan let out a heavy sigh and looked down at the floor.
“I didn’t have a choice,” Jordan insisted, his voice tight. “She was facing eviction.”
Clara dropped the envelope onto the granite countertop.
Her eyes widened with disbelief and frustration as she stared at her husband.
“Helping one child can’t put another child’s care at risk,” Clara replied sharply.
She thought immediately of Savannah and the upcoming school fees sitting on the desk.
Jordan stood silent, his jaw working as he tried to find a defense.
“Who are you even talking about?” Clara demanded, stepping closer to him. “Whose eviction?”
Jordan swallowed hard, finally looking up into her angry expression.
“It was Amber,” Jordan said quietly. “She had nowhere else to go.”
Clara shook her head, her frustration boiling over into outright alarm.
“You used our rent money to bail out your niece without saying a single word to me?” Clara asked.
“I had to move the funds immediately,” Jordan muttered, holding up his hands in a defensive gesture. “The bank transfer went through this morning.”
Clara pointed a finger directly toward the living room where Jordan’s laptop sat open on the coffee table.
“Get your laptop right now,” Clara said, her voice dropping to a dangerous, steady pitch. “I want to see every single figure in that account right this second.”
