Chapter 4 — The Message From Ethan’s Teacher
The email had come from Ethan’s history teacher, Mr. Lewis.
It was sent to several student volunteers.
It explained that the community center was especially short on winter clothes for teenagers.
Adult donations were common.
Children’s donations arrived regularly.
But coats and shoes in teen sizes were harder to find.
Ethan had circled one paragraph.
Several students in our district currently rely on the center. Donations should be handled respectfully and anonymously.
Claire looked toward him.
“Students from your own school?”
Ethan nodded.
Daniel’s expression softened.
“Do you know who?”
“We’re not supposed to.”
Ethan looked down.
Then:
“But I think I know one.”
Claire sat beside him.
“Who?”
Ethan hesitated.
“I’m not sure enough to say.”
Daniel watched his son carefully.
Ethan continued.
A few weeks earlier, one boy in his class had been wearing the same thin sweatshirt every morning despite freezing temperatures.
Ethan once offered him his spare jacket after soccer practice.
The boy refused.
Not angrily.
Just embarrassed.
Later, Ethan saw him walking toward the community center.
“I don’t know if he gets clothes there.”
“Maybe he was there for something else.”
“I don’t want to assume.”
Daniel went quiet.
The sentence struck him immediately.

Only minutes earlier, Daniel had done exactly that to Ethan.
He saw a box.
Saw family clothes.
Saw his son packing.
And decided the meaning before asking for the full explanation.
Claire noticed Daniel’s expression.
“You okay?”
He nodded slowly.
Then Ethan said:
“There was another reason I didn’t want to ask everyone until I’d sorted it.”
Daniel looked toward him.
“What reason?”
Ethan pointed toward one of the bags Claire had brought into the garage.
“Because some of those clothes aren’t ours.”
