Chapter 2 — Claire Had Brought the Clothes Into the Garage
Daniel stared at the phone.
Claire was on the recording.
Two days earlier, she had entered the garage carrying several bags.
She placed them beside the shelves.
Then went back inside.
A few minutes later, she returned with Daniel’s old winter coat draped over one arm.
She added it to the pile.
Daniel looked toward his wife.
“You put these here?”
Claire frowned.
“Yes.”
Then she remembered.
“I was sorting the hall closet.”
“Some things didn’t fit anymore.”
“Some hadn’t been worn in years.”
Daniel looked back at the footage.
Ethan was nowhere in sight.
Claire continued.
“I moved everything into the garage because I was going to ask everyone what they wanted to keep before donating anything.”
Ethan looked toward his father.
“That’s what I was trying to tell you.”
Daniel said nothing.
Claire took the phone.
“Keep playing it.”
Daniel did.
The footage jumped to later that afternoon.
Claire returned again.
This time she carried an empty cardboard box.
She placed it beside the clothing.
Then attached a handwritten note.
The camera angle made the words difficult to read.
Daniel zoomed in.
SORT FOR KEEP / DONATE — PLEASE DON’T THROW OUT YET
Daniel’s face changed even further.
Ethan had not secretly created the donation pile.
Claire had.
But there was still one question.
Why was Ethan boxing everything up by himself?
Daniel looked toward him.
“So what were you doing?”
Ethan hesitated.
Claire noticed.
“Now tell us the rest.”
Ethan looked toward the cardboard box.
“I was taking some of it somewhere.”
Daniel’s suspicion returned slightly.
“Where?”
Ethan took a breath.
“To school.”
Claire frowned.
“Why would you take our clothes to school?”
Ethan looked uncomfortable.
Because although he had not taken anything from the house without permission, he had been planning something neither parent knew about.
