Chapter 13 — The Community Center
Saturday morning, Daniel and Ethan loaded six boxes into the car.
Two from school.
Two from Daniel’s office.
Two from their neighborhood.
Daniel’s blue winter coat was in one of them.
When they arrived at the community center, volunteers were already sorting donations.
Rows of coats hung on portable racks.
Shoes were arranged by size.
Sweaters were folded on long tables.
A staff member thanked Ethan.
“Teen sizes are always the hardest.”
Daniel watched his son help unload.
There was no dramatic presentation.
No photographs of recipients.
No social-media moment.
Just boxes moving from one set of hands to another.
Ethan seemed to prefer it that way.
Then Daniel saw one of the volunteers hold up his old coat.
“Large men’s.”
Another volunteer carried it toward the teen-and-adult rack.
Daniel smiled.
“That thing finally has a purpose.”
Ethan laughed.
“Better than the garage.”
They worked for nearly an hour.
Then a student from Ethan’s school entered the center.
Daniel noticed Ethan become quiet.
It was the boy Ethan had mentioned.
The one who wore the thin sweatshirt.
Daniel looked toward his son.
Ethan deliberately looked away.
He did not stare.
Did not point.
Did not tell Daniel:
“See? I knew it.”
The boy spoke privately with a staff member.
Whatever happened next was none of their business.
Daniel understood why Ethan had refused to name him earlier.
Knowing something was possible was not the same as knowing the whole story.
Daniel had learned that lesson in the garage.
As they walked back to the car, he said:
“You handled that well.”
Ethan looked toward him.
“Handled what?”
Daniel smiled.
“Exactly.”
But on the drive home, Ethan finally told Daniel the one part of the original garage argument he still had not explained.
