Chapter 9 — The Bag Ethan Brought Home
Ethan placed the paper bag on the kitchen counter.
“Stuff from the clothing drive.”
Daniel frowned.
“Why are donations coming back?”
Then he stopped.
He had almost added:
“Did you take something?”
Instead:
“What happened?”
Ethan noticed the difference.
He opened the bag.
Inside were three sweaters.
“They can’t use these.”
“Why?”
“One has a broken zipper.”
“One has a stain nobody noticed.”
“And this one has a name written inside.”
Daniel looked.
JASON M.
He laughed.
“We missed another one of your uncle’s things.”
Ethan smiled.
“Apparently.”
Daniel picked up the sweater.
“Thanks for bringing it back.”
Ethan nodded.
No argument.
No camera.
No accusation.
Just a question and an answer.
That night, Ethan told Claire about it.
“Dad didn’t freak out.”
Claire smiled.
“High praise.”
“You know what I mean.”
“I do.”
Then Ethan became serious.
“He actually asked.”
Claire nodded.
“Good.”
The clothing drive continued for another week.
Ethan spent several afternoons sorting coats by size.
He never learned whether the classmate he suspected used the community center.
And he deliberately did not investigate.
That had not been the point.
The clothes were there for whoever needed them.
Then Mr. Lewis announced that the drive had collected more than twice as many teen-size coats as expected.
Ethan came home carrying a thank-you card from the community center.
Daniel read it.
Then made a decision.
He wanted to add something else to the drive.
But first, he would have to ask Ethan for permission.
