Emma had been sitting beside her grandmother for almost forty minutes when Margaret finally stopped staring at the hospital bill.
“This can’t be right.”
Emma looked up from her phone.
“What?”
Margaret pointed toward the statement.
“This charge.”
It listed an outpatient procedure from seven months earlier.
Margaret shook her head.
“I wasn’t even in this hospital that month.”
They walked toward the reception desk.
Nurse Kelly took the statement.
“Let me check.”
She entered Margaret’s name.
Date of birth.
Patient number.
Then paused.
“Do you remember visiting our East Wing clinic on March 11?”
Margaret shook her head.
“No.”
“What about November 6 last year?”
“No.”
Emma leaned closer to the paper.
“Grandma.”
“What?”
“There are more.”
She pointed toward several smaller entries.
Lab work.
Imaging.
Prescription administration.
Follow-up consultations.
All on dates Margaret insisted she had never been there.
Kelly’s expression became serious.
“I’m calling an administrator.”
Ten minutes later, hospital administrator Daniel Reeves joined them.
He opened Margaret’s account on another computer.
Then stopped scrolling.
“How far back does this go?” Emma asked.
Daniel didn’t answer immediately.
He scrolled again.
And again.
Finally he looked at Margaret.
“Mrs. Bennett, our system shows appointments under your identity going back almost four years.”
Margaret’s face went pale.
“Four years?”
Daniel nodded.
Then he turned the monitor slightly.
One detail appeared repeatedly beside the mysterious visits.
EMERGENCY CONTACT: ALICE BENNETT.
Emma frowned.
“Who’s Alice?”
Margaret stared at the screen.
“My sister.”
Then she whispered:
“But Alice died six years ago.”
