Chloe Took Maya’s Lunch and Used Her Meal Card — Then the Cafeteria Computer Showed Who the Account Really Belonged To
Chapter 1 — The Red Meal Card
Maya Collins always chose the table nearest the cafeteria window.
It was quieter there.
Farther away from the loudest groups.
And most days, nobody bothered her.
That Tuesday was different.
Maya had barely opened her milk when Chloe Bennett walked toward her table.
Chloe was two grades older.
Taller.
Confident.
And surrounded by three girls who seemed to laugh at almost everything she said.
Chloe stopped beside Maya.
She looked down at the lunch tray.
Chicken sandwich.
Apple slices.
Milk.
Chocolate pudding.
“That looks good.”
Maya looked up.
“Okay.”
Chloe smiled.
Then grabbed the tray.
Maya froze.
“That’s mine.”
The girls behind Chloe laughed.
“Not anymore,” Chloe said.
She walked away carrying the entire tray.
Maya didn’t follow.
She didn’t shout.
She simply sat there staring at the empty space in front of her.
What Chloe didn’t know was that the tray wasn’t the only thing she had taken.
Maya’s red school meal card had been sitting beneath the napkin.
Ten minutes later, Chloe decided she wanted another drink.
She walked toward the cafeteria register carrying Maya’s tray.
Then pulled the red card from beneath the napkin.
Mrs. Helen Brooks stood behind the register.
“Another purchase?” she asked.
Chloe nodded casually.
“Yeah.”
Mrs. Helen scanned the card.
The computer beeped.
Then a student photograph appeared.
Mrs. Helen looked at the screen.
Then at Chloe.
Then back at the photograph.
“This isn’t your card.”
Chloe’s smile disappeared.
Mrs. Helen turned the monitor slightly.
Maya’s photograph was staring back at them.
And beneath it was the account name:
MAYA COLLINS.
Mrs. Helen looked past Chloe.
Across the cafeteria, Maya was still sitting at the window table.
With no lunch in front of her.
At that moment, Assistant Principal Daniel Morris walked toward the register.
Chloe immediately started talking.
“She gave it to me.”
Mrs. Helen looked at the card in her hand.
Then at the digital transaction history on the screen.
“Then I think we’re going to ask Maya.”
