Lily Wrote “214” Beside the Doorway — Then Daniel Found a Matching Key Hidden Inside Vanessa’s Handbag
Chapter 1 — The Number Beside the Door
Daniel stopped in the kitchen when he noticed three numbers written in blue crayon beside the doorway.
214.
He stared at them.
“Lily?”
His little daughter looked up from the floor.
She was sitting beside a pile of plastic building blocks.
“Did you write this?”
Lily nodded.
Then immediately pointed toward Vanessa’s handbag on the kitchen chair.
Daniel frowned.
“Mom’s bag?”
Lily nodded again.
Vanessa entered from the hallway.
The moment she saw the number, she froze.
Daniel noticed.
“What does 214 mean?”
Vanessa stared at Lily.
“Where did you see that?”
Lily pointed toward the handbag.
Daniel slowly walked over.
“Vanessa?”
“Daniel, don’t.”
That was enough to make him stop.
“Don’t what?”
Vanessa moved toward the bag.
Daniel reached it first.
He opened the zipper.
Makeup.
Wallet.
Tissues.
A child’s hair clip.
Then his fingers touched cold metal.
He pulled out an old rectangular key tag.
The brass was scratched around the edges.
Across its center was engraved:
214.
Daniel looked toward the wall.
Then toward Lily.
Same number.
He held the key in front of Vanessa.
“You want to explain this?”
Vanessa stared at it in shock.
“Lily found that?”
“Apparently she saw enough to know where I should look.”
Lily pointed between the wall and Daniel’s hand.
“Mommy goes there.”
Daniel’s expression changed.
“Goes where?”
Vanessa closed her eyes.
For several seconds, she said nothing.
Then:
“Room 214.”
“What room?”
Vanessa looked at him.
“At my old high school.”
Daniel almost laughed.
“Your high school closed fifteen years ago.”
“Part of it did.”
“Why do you have a key?”
Vanessa’s eyes filled.
“Because somebody mailed it to me three weeks ago.”
Daniel stared at her.
“Who?”
She whispered:
“A woman my family pretended never existed.”
