Chapter 7 — The Phone Call
Megan kept her voice calm.
“Why would you ask that?”
There was a pause.
“You mentioned getting advice.”
“I never said I was seeing an attorney today.”
Greg didn’t answer immediately.
“I must have misunderstood.”
Megan looked toward Officer Ruiz.
He was already writing something down.
“Greg, do you know Victor Hale?”
The call went silent.
Then Greg laughed awkwardly.
“Of course. Everybody knows Victor.”
“Did you send him to Bellamy’s Diner?”
Another silence.
Longer this time.
“What are you talking about?”
“Victor just stole something from my purse.”
Greg hung up.
Officer Ruiz immediately contacted detectives.
Within an hour, police were speaking to Greenwell Medical Supply.
Victor’s office was empty.
His company vehicle was gone.
Greg Lawson had also left work early.
But the strangest discovery came from Natalie Price.
Megan’s coworker.
When detectives questioned her, Natalie began crying.
“I tried to warn her.”
Megan stared at her.
“Warn me about what?”
Natalie explained that she had noticed the same suspicious payments months earlier.
She asked Greg about them.
He told her they were confidential vendor expenses.
Then she noticed something else.
One of the vendor addresses belonged to a mailbox rented by Victor Hale.
Natalie stopped asking questions.
But she secretly copied several records.
“Where are they?” Megan asked.
Natalie looked around the interview room.
“Somewhere Greg doesn’t know about.”
Unlike Megan, Natalie hadn’t kept her evidence in an envelope.
She had hidden it inside the company’s own backup system.
