Sophie Came Home With a Note Saying “DON’T TELL DAD” — Then Daniel Opened the Kitchen Cabinet
Chapter 1 — The Yellow Note
Sophie Miller came home from school at 3:42 on a rainy Thursday afternoon.
Usually, Daniel heard her before he saw her.
The front door would swing open.
Her backpack would hit the floor.
Then she would immediately begin telling him everything that happened that day.
Who got in trouble.
What happened at lunch.
Which teacher assigned too much homework.
But that afternoon, Sophie said nothing.
She walked into the kitchen carrying her silver metal lunchbox.
Then she placed it quietly on the counter.
Daniel looked up from his laptop.
“Hey, Soph.”
No response.
Daniel closed the computer.
“Sophie?”
She kept her eyes down.
“What happened?”
“Nothing.”
Daniel knew immediately that wasn’t true.
His daughter was eight years old.
And Sophie had never been good at hiding emotion.
Her shoulders were stiff.
Her eyes were red.
She was holding the handle of her lunchbox so tightly that her knuckles had turned white.
Daniel stood.
“Did something happen at school?”
Sophie shook her head.
“Did somebody bother you?”
Another shake.
Daniel moved closer.
“Can I look in your lunchbox?”
Sophie suddenly grabbed it.
“No.”
Daniel stopped.
That frightened him more than anything else.
“Why not?”
Sophie looked toward the hallway.
Then toward the kitchen cabinets.
“I just don’t want you to.”
Daniel crouched beside her.
“Sophie, you’re not in trouble.”
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Promise?”
“Promise.”
She slowly released the lunchbox.
Daniel opened it.
The sandwich he had packed that morning was untouched.
The apple slices were still inside their container.
But sitting on top of everything was a folded piece of yellow paper.
Daniel picked it up.
Sophie turned away.
He unfolded the note.
Three words had been written in thick black marker.
DON’T TELL DAD.
Daniel’s expression changed immediately.
He looked at Sophie.
“Who gave you this?”
Sophie didn’t answer.
Instead, she slowly raised one hand.
And pointed toward the kitchen cabinets.
