Chapter 5 — What Was Inside
Police arrived twelve minutes later.
Officer Daniel Ruiz asked Megan what had been inside the missing envelope.
She hesitated.
Then answered.
“Financial records.”
“Personal?”
“Company records.”
Megan worked as an accounts supervisor for Greenwell Medical Supply.
Two weeks earlier, she discovered payments she couldn’t explain.
Invoices from companies she had never seen before.
Amounts just small enough to avoid automatic review.
But together they totaled more than three hundred thousand dollars.
She reported the issue to her supervisor.
Nothing happened.
Then several records disappeared from the internal system.
That frightened her.
So Megan printed copies.
The envelope contained those copies.
She planned to show them to an attorney before deciding whether to contact authorities.
Officer Ruiz looked toward the empty counter stool.
“Who knew you had those documents?”
“My supervisor.”
“Anyone else?”
Megan thought.
“One coworker.”
“Names?”
“Greg Lawson. My supervisor.”
She paused.
“And Natalie Price.”
Brandon suddenly spoke.
“Greg.”
Everyone looked at him.
“What?” Megan asked.
“The man said his name was Greg.”
Megan felt cold.
“Describe him.”
Brandon did.
Mid-fifties.
Gray hair.
Dark jacket.
A small scar beside his left eyebrow.
Megan knew immediately.
The man at the counter had not been Greg Lawson.
But she knew exactly who he was.
His name was Victor Hale.
And Victor worked directly for Greenwell’s chief financial officer.
