Megan Was Told Her Son Spilled the Drink — Then She Noticed One Detail in the Diner Camera Footage

Chapter 4 — The Missing Envelope

Restaurant manager Evelyn Shaw arrived minutes later.

Megan explained everything.

The deliberate spill.

The stranger’s nod.

The open purse.

The missing envelope.

Evelyn looked at Brandon.

“Is this true?”

“I didn’t steal anything.”

“Did you intentionally knock over the drink?”

Brandon looked down.

“Yes.”

Evelyn stared at him.

“Why?”

He didn’t answer.

Megan crossed her arms.

“Call the police.”

Brandon immediately looked up.

“Wait.”

Megan ignored him.

Evelyn reached for the phone.

“Please,” Brandon said.

His voice was different now.

Not defensive.

Afraid.

“I can explain.”

Megan looked at him.

“Then start.”

Brandon glanced toward Tyler.

“The man at the counter paid me fifty dollars.”

Evelyn’s eyes widened.

“For what?”

“To spill the drink.”

Megan stared at him.

“Why?”

“He said he was playing a joke.”

“You believed that?”

Brandon looked ashamed.

“He said he knew you.”

“He doesn’t.”

“I know that now.”

Megan’s anger rose.

“What was the point of spilling the drink?”

Brandon swallowed.

“He told me to make sure both of you looked toward the table.”

Tyler suddenly understood first.

“So we wouldn’t see him.”

Megan turned toward her son.

Tyler pointed at her purse.

“He wanted us looking at the soda.”

The spill hadn’t been the crime.

It had been the distraction.
