Evan Spotted Bright Clothing Below the Forest Overlook — Then Ranger Cole Saw Where the Fresh Footprints Led
Chapter 1 — Something Below the Overlook
Evan Miller had stopped only because the view was beautiful.
He and his father, Michael, had been hiking through Pine Ridge State Park for nearly two hours.
The wooden overlook sat high above a thick valley of cedar and pine.
Most visitors stopped there for photographs.
Michael was reaching for his water bottle when Evan suddenly leaned toward the railing.
“Dad… look.”
Michael followed his son’s finger.
At first he saw only trees.
Then something bright moved in the wind.
A piece of orange fabric hung from a branch below the overlook.
Not far from a cluster of dark rocks.
Michael’s expression changed.
“Stay here.”
He pulled out his phone and called the park emergency number.
Within minutes, Ranger Cole Bennett arrived carrying ropes and climbing equipment.
He walked directly toward the railing.
Then stopped.
“Nobody touch anything.”
Michael frowned.
“Why?”
Cole pointed toward the right side of the overlook.
One section of railing had been broken.
Not weathered.
Not rotten.
Freshly broken.
Splinters of pale wood still covered the ground.
Michael bent closer.
Then noticed several deep footprints in the dirt beneath it.
Cole crouched beside them.
“These are fresh.”
Another park employee approached from the trail behind them.
Aaron Blake.
He wore a green maintenance jacket and heavy work boots.
The moment Aaron saw the footprints, he froze.
Cole slowly looked up.
The tracks continued away from the broken railing.
Across the dirt.
Then toward the same service path Aaron had just walked from.
Michael noticed his reaction.
“Aaron… do you know something about this?”
Aaron said nothing.
And suddenly the bright clothing below the cliff, the broken railing, and the fresh footprints no longer looked like three separate things.
