Daniel Found a Working Two-Way Radio Hidden Inside His Son’s Bedroom Wall — Then a Voice on the Other End Revealed Who Had Been Contacting Noah in Secret

Chapter 9 — Henry Had Considered Secret Visits Too

Daniel’s expression hardened.

“You almost what?”

Henry answered quietly.

“I missed him.”

“That’s not an answer.”

“I thought if you and Rachel were out and Noah was with a sitter, maybe I could stop by for ten minutes.”

Rachel stared at the phone.

“Without telling us?”

Henry went silent.

“Yes.”

Daniel walked away from Noah before continuing.

“Did you ever do it?”

“No.”

“Why not?”

“Because even I knew that was too far.”

Daniel almost laughed.

“But the radio wasn’t?”

Henry had no answer.

Rachel looked toward Noah.

He was sitting at the kitchen table drawing.

He could hear pieces of the conversation.

She closed the door between the kitchen and hallway.

Daniel continued:

“You were asking a child about his parents’ schedule because you were considering visiting behind our backs.”

“Yes.”

“And you involved Noah in that.”

Henry’s voice cracked.

“I know how it sounds.”

Daniel answered:

“It sounds exactly like what happened.”

Henry became defensive again.

“I never asked Noah to leave the house.”

“I never tried to take him anywhere.”

“I never told him to disobey you about anything dangerous.”

“I’m his grandfather.”

Daniel waited.

Then said:

“Being his grandfather is why you should have protected him from being put in the middle.”

That silenced Henry.

Daniel ended the call.

He did not decide the future of the relationship yet.

First he and Rachel needed to talk to Noah again.

But when they did, Noah revealed something neither of them expected.

The radio conversations had started because of a promise Daniel himself had unknowingly broken.
