Chapter 7 — Henry Came Back After Dark
Daniel moved the recording forward.
7:52 PM.
The front door camera showed Henry walking back toward the house.
Daniel remembered that evening.
He and Rachel had taken Noah to a restaurant.
The house had been empty.
Henry still had the temporary door code Daniel had given him for the shelf repair.
The recording showed him entering.
Fourteen minutes later, he left.
Daniel stared.
“He came back.”
Rachel looked angry.
“Without telling us.”
They checked the interior hallway camera.
Henry walked directly toward Noah’s bedroom.
He stayed there for approximately ten minutes.
Then left.
Daniel called his father.
This time, he did not use the radio.
Henry answered.
“Daniel.”
“Why did you come back into my house after we left?”
Silence.
“We have the recording.”
Henry sighed.
“I forgot something.”
Daniel closed his eyes.
“What?”
“A screwdriver.”
“You spent ten minutes in Noah’s bedroom retrieving a screwdriver?”
Henry went quiet.
Daniel continued:
“Stop making this worse.”
Another silence.
Then Henry admitted it.
“That’s when I put the radio there.”
Rachel shook her head.
Daniel asked:
“Why couldn’t you put it there while you were repairing the shelf?”
Henry answered:
“Because Noah was with you.”
Daniel stared at the phone.
“Meaning?”
“I needed to leave instructions.”
“What instructions?”
Henry hesitated.
“There was a note with the radio.”
Daniel and Rachel looked at each other.
They had found no note.
Daniel returned immediately to the wall compartment.
He emptied everything.
Board games.
The old blanket.
A puzzle box.
Then Rachel felt something taped beneath the upper wooden ledge.
A folded piece of paper.
