Chapter 10 — Why Noah Answered the First Time
Daniel sat beside Noah.
“Can you tell us why you started using the radio?”
Noah shrugged.
“Grandpa called.”
“The first time?”
Noah nodded.
“Were you scared?” Rachel asked.
“No.”
“Why not?”
“Because Grandpa said he would.”
Daniel frowned.
Noah explained.
Before the argument between Daniel and Henry became serious, Daniel had repeatedly told Noah:
“We’ll call Grandpa this weekend.”
But several weekends passed.
Something always happened.
Work.
Soccer.
Family plans.
Then Daniel and Henry argued again.
The calls stopped completely.
Noah believed Daniel had simply forgotten.
Henry told him the radio would make things easier.
“I missed him,” Noah said.
Daniel looked down.
That did not justify Henry’s secrecy.
But Daniel had to acknowledge something uncomfortable.
Noah had been affected by an adult conflict without anyone properly explaining what was happening.
“You thought I was stopping you from talking to Grandpa because I was mad?”
Noah nodded.
“Were you?”
Daniel thought before answering.
“Partly.”
Noah looked surprised by the honesty.
Daniel continued.
“I was angry with Grandpa.”
“And I didn’t handle every part of that well.”
“But I also needed him to respect our rules as your parents.”
Noah asked:
“Can you both just stop being mad?”
Daniel’s face softened.
“I wish it worked that fast.”
Rachel added:
“But none of it should be your job to fix.”
Noah nodded.
Then:
“What happens to the radio?”
Daniel looked toward Rachel.
They had discussed that privately.
“We’re keeping it out of your room for now.”
Noah looked disappointed.
Daniel continued:
“Not because talking to Grandpa was bad.”
“Because secret communication with an adult is not something we are going to allow.”
Noah looked down.
Then he asked:
“Can I tell Grandpa goodbye first?”
Daniel and Rachel exchanged a look.
The answer they gave would determine whether Noah experienced the radio discovery as protection…
or simply as another adult taking someone he loved away.
