Chapter 13 — No More Secret Channels
Daniel looked at his father.
“If you want a relationship with Noah, there are no secret channels.”
Henry nodded.
Daniel continued.
“No private devices we don’t know about.”
“No asking him to hide conversations.”
“No questions about when we’re out of the house so you can decide whether to visit.”
Henry looked ashamed.
“Understood.”
Rachel added:
“And if you disagree with a rule we make for Noah, you talk to us.”
“You do not tell him our rules don’t matter.”
Henry nodded again.
“Agreed.”
Daniel looked at him carefully.
“This isn’t negotiable.”
“I know.”
Henry took a breath.
“Can I ask one thing?”
Daniel waited.
“Don’t make Noah think he did something terrible.”
Daniel’s expression softened slightly.
“We haven’t.”
Henry nodded.
“Good.”
Then:
“Because the secrecy was my idea.”
Daniel appreciated that Henry did not try to spread the responsibility backward onto the child.
They agreed on a temporary arrangement.
One scheduled phone call each week.
Daniel or Rachel would know when it happened.
Henry could attend Noah’s baseball games if invited.
No unannounced visits.
No direct private contact outside those agreements until trust improved.
It was not the relationship Henry wanted.
But he accepted it.
Then Daniel picked up the radio.
“What do we do with this?”
Henry smiled sadly.
“Whatever you want.”
Daniel looked at it.
He had expected himself to hate the device.
Instead, it now felt like an object whose meaning depended entirely on how it was used.
“Noah wants to keep it.”
Henry looked surprised.
“Does he?”
“Yeah.”
Daniel thought for a moment.
Then came up with an idea.
The radio would stay.
But not hidden inside a bedroom wall.
And the first time the family used it again would be completely different from every secret conversation that came before.
