Ethan Came Home With a Box of Pastries and a Letter Only His Father Could Read — Then Claire Saw Who Had Signed It
Chapter 1 — The Envelope From School
Daniel noticed the pastry box before Ethan had even taken off his backpack.
It was huge.
White cardboard.
Red string.
A gold bakery logo stamped across the top.
Daniel looked at his son.
“Where did all of those come from?”
Ethan carefully placed the box on the kitchen table.
“School.”
“Your school gave you twenty pastries?”
Ethan shrugged.
“Mrs. Parker said I could bring them home.”
Daniel laughed.
“Well, I’m suddenly a big fan of Mrs. Parker.”
But Ethan didn’t laugh.
Instead, he reached into the front pocket of his backpack.
He removed a sealed envelope.
Across the front were three handwritten words:
FOR DANIEL ONLY.
Daniel’s smile disappeared.
“What’s this?”
“Mrs. Parker told me to give it only to you.”
“Did she say why?”
Ethan shook his head.
“She just said not to lose it.”
Daniel opened the envelope.
The letter inside was short.
He read the first paragraph.
Then read it again.
His expression changed.
The kitchen door opened behind him.
Claire entered carrying grocery bags.
“What’s going on?”
Daniel didn’t answer.
He simply turned the letter toward her.
Claire saw the first few lines.
Then the signature at the bottom.
Her face went pale.
Ethan looked from one parent to the other.
“I wasn’t supposed to show Mom first.”
The kitchen went completely silent.
Daniel looked back at the pastries.
The gold logo read:
HARRISON & SONS BAKERY — EST. 1978.
Then he looked again at Mrs. Parker’s letter.
The sentence bothering him most was simple:
A man visited Ethan at school today and claimed to be his grandfather.
Daniel slowly turned toward Claire.
“Your father has been dead for twelve years.”
Claire gripped the grocery bag tighter.
Then whispered:
“That’s what I told you.”
