Chapter 11 — Noah Gets One Open Conversation

Daniel did not immediately say no.

“You can talk to Grandpa.”

Noah looked up.

“Now?”

“With us here.”

He nodded.

Daniel switched on the radio.

Then pressed the button.

“Dad.”

Henry answered several seconds later.

“I’m here.”

Daniel handed the radio to Noah.

“Hi, Grandpa.”

Henry’s voice softened instantly.

“Hey, buddy.”

Noah looked toward his parents.

Then:

“They found everything.”

Henry sighed.

“I know.”

Noah asked:

“Are you mad at me?”

Henry answered immediately.

“No.”

Then Henry stopped.

His next words were slower.

“And Noah, I need to tell you something.”

“I shouldn’t have asked you to keep that radio secret.”

Noah looked surprised.

“Why?”

Henry took a breath.

“Because the problem was between me and your parents.”

“I made you carry part of it.”

“That wasn’t fair.”

Daniel looked toward Rachel.

This was the first time Henry had said it clearly.

No excuses about Daniel being controlling.

No claims that grandparents had special rights.

Henry continued:

“If your mom or dad ever tells you an adult is asking you to hide something from them and it makes you uncomfortable, you tell them.”

Noah looked toward Daniel.

“Even Grandpa?”

Henry answered:

“Especially if Grandpa is the one doing something he shouldn’t.”

Noah smiled faintly.

Then:

“Do I still get to talk to you?”

There was a long silence.

Henry did not answer for Daniel.

“That’s for your parents to decide.”

Daniel noticed that too.

When the conversation ended, Noah handed the radio back.

“Can we not throw it away?”

Daniel looked at the black device.

“We won’t throw it away.”

But before deciding what to do with it, Daniel wanted one final conversation with Henry face-to-face.

And this time Noah would not be in the middle.
