Chapter 8 — Grandpa’s Instructions
Daniel unfolded the paper.
Henry’s handwriting filled one side.
Noah — this is one of Grandpa’s radios.
I have the matching one.
If you ever want to talk, turn yours on and use Channel 6.
Then:
Keep it in the wall cubby so nobody accidentally moves it.
And finally:
We don’t need to tell Mom and Dad because they are upset with Grandpa right now and they might take it away before they understand.
Daniel stopped reading.
Rachel took the note.
“Before they understand?”
She looked furious.
“He made our decision sound like a misunderstanding he was entitled to bypass.”
Daniel nodded.
Noah had not invented the secrecy.
Henry had written it down.
Rachel continued reading.
There was one more instruction.
If you hear Grandpa call and can’t talk, don’t answer. I’ll try again another night.
No mention of continuous listening.
No instruction to leave the radio transmitting.
Daniel checked the device manual online using the model number.
The radio did not automatically transmit room audio in its current setting.
Someone on the other end could not simply sit and listen to Noah’s bedroom.
Noah had to press the talk button for his voice to be transmitted.
That relieved one of Daniel and Rachel’s biggest fears.
But it also clarified the actual problem.
Henry had deliberately created a secret communication channel with their son.
Daniel returned to the phone.
“Dad, I found your note.”
Henry became silent.
“You told a nine-year-old child to hide this from his parents.”
“I told him why.”
“No.”
Daniel’s voice remained controlled.
“You gave him your version of why.”
Then Daniel asked the question that had bothered Rachel all morning.
“Why were you asking Noah when we weren’t home?”
This time Henry did not deny it.
His answer was:
“Because I almost came to see him twice.”
