Chapter 2 — “Who Is This?”
Daniel picked up the radio.
Rachel immediately whispered:
“Be careful.”
Daniel found the talk button.
He pressed it.
“Who is this?”
Silence.
The red light stopped blinking.
Daniel waited.
“You just called for my son.”
“Who are you?”
Nothing.
Rachel looked toward Noah.
The boy had started waking.
“Dad?”
Daniel immediately lowered the radio.
Rachel sat beside Noah.
“It’s okay.”
Noah rubbed his eyes.
Then he saw what Daniel was holding.
His entire expression changed.
Daniel noticed instantly.
“Noah.”
The boy stared at the radio.
“Where did you get this?”
Noah did not answer.
Rachel looked toward Daniel.
Then back at their son.
“Sweetheart, nobody is angry with you.”
“But we need to understand why this was in your room.”
Noah pulled the blanket closer.
“It’s mine.”
Daniel frowned.
“Where did you get it?”
Noah looked down.
“I can’t say.”
Daniel felt his stomach tighten.
Rachel kept her voice calm.
“Why can’t you say?”
Noah whispered:
“I promised.”
The answer frightened Daniel more than the radio itself.
“Promised who?”
Noah began crying.
“Please don’t be mad.”
Rachel hugged him.
“We’re not asking you to protect anyone.”
Daniel looked at the radio again.
There was a strip of white tape on the bottom.
Something had been written on it.
Daniel moved beneath the bedside lamp.
Two letters were visible.
H.R.
Daniel’s face changed.
Rachel saw it.
“What?”
Daniel looked toward her.
There was one person in the family who had labeled his belongings with those initials for as long as Daniel could remember.
