Chapter 12 — Daniel and Henry Finally Speak Directly
Henry came to the house two days later.
Noah was at school.
Rachel remained with Daniel.
The black radio sat on the dining table.
Henry looked at it when he entered.
“I suppose that’s appropriate.”
Daniel did not smile.
“Sit down.”
Henry did.
Daniel placed the hidden note beside the radio.
“I want to hear you explain this without speaking through Noah.”
Henry nodded.
He admitted the sequence.
After Daniel confronted him about undermining house rules, Henry felt insulted.
Then Daniel stopped inviting him over as frequently.
Henry interpreted that as Daniel trying to separate him from Noah.
Instead of asking Daniel how they could repair things, Henry became stubborn.
He remembered the old radios he used during camping trips.
Then found the wall compartment while repairing Noah’s shelf.
The idea appeared immediately.
A private way to talk.
“You knew we’d say no,” Rachel said.
Henry nodded.
“Yes.”
“That’s why you hid it.”
“Yes.”
Daniel pointed toward the note.
“You told Noah not to tell us.”
“Yes.”
“You asked him when we weren’t home.”
Henry’s face tightened.
“Yes.”
“And you considered visiting without telling us.”
“Yes.”
Daniel waited.
Henry finally said:
“I was wrong.”
Daniel leaned back.
“Why?”
Henry looked frustrated.
“You want me to say it again?”
“I want to know you understand what part was wrong.”
Henry became quiet.
Then:
“Because I made Noah responsible for keeping my relationship with him alive.”
Daniel said nothing.
Henry continued.
“And I made your rules something he had to help me get around.”
Rachel nodded slowly.
Henry looked toward her.
“I should have come to you two.”
“Even if I thought you were being unfair.”
Then he looked toward Daniel.
“Especially then.”
That was the answer Daniel needed.
But accepting the explanation did not mean immediately restoring everything to the way it had been.
Daniel gave Henry one condition for future contact with Noah.
And Henry’s response would decide whether the family moved forward at all.
