Chapter 3 — Marcus’s Story
They moved into a private office.
Noah sat beside Emily holding his yellow truck tightly.
Marcus remained across the table.
“Start from the beginning,” Grant said.
Marcus nodded.
Three weeks earlier, he found an envelope beneath a filing cabinet in the bell-services office.
Inside were photocopies of hotel room keys.
Not physical cards.
Printed access logs.
Each listed room numbers and timestamps.
Marcus thought someone had simply misplaced security paperwork.
Then he noticed something strange.
The access entries occurred during periods when guests were known to be outside the hotel.
Weddings.
Conference dinners.
Spa appointments.
Airport transfers.
“How would anyone know that?” David asked.
Marcus looked uncomfortable.
“Bell services knows a lot.”
They stored luggage.
Called taxis.
Delivered bags.
Helped guests leave for events.
A bell employee could easily know when a room was likely to be empty.
Then Marcus heard two guests complain that small valuables had disappeared.
Neither reported a break-in.
Nothing looked disturbed.
The hotel treated both as misplaced property.
Marcus became suspicious.
“So you started investigating?” Grant asked.
“Quietly.”
“Why quietly?”
Marcus looked toward Rebecca.
“Because somebody with staff access had to be involved.”
Marcus began tracking temporary cards issued each day.
Three cards repeatedly disappeared from the charging dock for short periods.
Then returned.
So that morning, Marcus took the three cards himself.
He hid them behind the wheel cover of his luggage cart.
“Why?” Emily asked.
“I wanted to see what happened when whoever was using them couldn’t find them.”
Rebecca stared at him.
“You should have gone to security.”
Marcus nodded.
“I know.”
Then he looked toward Grant.
“But I didn’t trust security either.”
Grant’s expression hardened.
“Why not?”
Marcus reached into his pocket.
He removed another folded page.
“Because one of the cards was issued under your employee number.”
