Mia Kept Saying the Dog “Brought Her a Secret” — Then the Hallway Camera Showed Where It Really Came From

Chapter 2 — The Name Helen Hadn’t Said in Forty Years

Claire had never heard the name.

“Who’s Nora?”

Helen stared at the envelope.

“Someone I used to know.”

Claire folded her arms.

“Mom.”

Helen looked toward Mia.

The child was still wiping her eyes.

Claire immediately sat beside her.

“You were telling the truth.”

Mia nodded.

“Buddy brought it.”

Claire hugged her.

“I know.”

Then Helen crouched beside her granddaughter.

“I’m sorry, sweetheart.”

Mia looked at her.

“You thought I took it.”

Helen swallowed.

“I did.”

“But I didn’t.”

“No.”

Helen kissed her forehead.

“You didn’t.”

Then Claire held up the envelope.

“Now tell me about Nora.”

Helen sat down slowly.

“Nora Bennett was my best friend.”

Not a casual friend.

Not a school acquaintance.

They had been inseparable from age twelve.

Helen played piano.

Nora sang.

By sixteen, they were performing together at local events under the name:

THE HELEN & NORA DUO.

They entered talent shows.

Performed at weddings.

Recorded homemade demos.

Then, during their final year of high school, they entered a statewide music competition.

“Did you win?” Mia asked.

Helen smiled sadly.

“Nora did.”

Claire noticed the wording.

“Nora did?”

Helen nodded.

“Not us.”

That competition ended their friendship.

And Helen had spent forty years believing Nora had betrayed her.
