Mia Kept Saying the Dog “Brought Her a Secret” — Then the Hallway Camera Showed Where It Really Came From
Chapter 8 — Two Women at the Piano
Nora arrived the next afternoon.
This time she came through the front door.
Helen waited in the living room.
Claire stayed nearby.
Mia sat on the stairs.
Buddy stood directly beside the entrance, tail wagging.
Nora smiled at him.
“So you’re the mailman.”
Mia corrected her.
“He found your secret.”
Nora laughed.
“Apparently.”
Then Helen and Nora looked at each other.
Both were in their seventies now.
The teenage girls from the old photographs were gone.
But not completely.
Nora still wore the same style of silver ring.
The one the camera had captured.
Helen noticed.
“You still have that?”
Nora looked down.
“My mother gave it to me.”
Helen nodded.
Then she said:
“I’m sorry.”
Nora’s eyes filled.
“For what part?”
Helen gave a weak laugh.
“Most of it.”
She apologized for refusing to listen.
For assuming the headline told the full story.
For never reading Nora’s letters.
Nora apologized too.
“I should’ve left the trophy at your door.”
Helen shook her head.
“That wouldn’t have fixed us.”
Then Nora noticed the old upright piano in the corner.
“You kept it?”
Helen smiled.
“Of course.”
Nora sat beside her.
Helen placed her hands over the keys.
For the first time in four decades, she played the opening melody of Blue December.
Nora began singing.
Her voice was older.
Softer.
But Helen remembered exactly where every word belonged.
