Claire assumed Nora’s victory launched a successful music career.
It didn’t.
Nora moved to California the following year.
She attended college.
Then became a music teacher.
For nearly thirty years, she taught elementary-school choir.
She never released Blue December commercially.
She never recorded an album.
She never used the competition trophy to build a career.
“Then why did you think she did?” Claire asked.
Helen stared at her.
“Because that’s the story I made in my head.”
Helen assumed Nora moved west to pursue fame.
In reality, Nora followed her older sister there after their mother died.
Claire found a school-news article from years later.
Nora was pictured beside a children’s choir.
Behind them was a handwritten banner:
BLUE DECEMBER WINTER CONCERT.
Helen touched the screen.
“She kept using the title.”
Then Claire noticed a quote from Nora.
The song was written when I was seventeen with my best friend Helen, who taught me that every melody needs someone willing to listen.
Helen began crying.
“She was still saying my name.”
“For years.”
Then Helen looked toward the phone number Nora had written.
“Why now?”
Claire couldn’t answer.
So Helen finally called.
A woman answered after three rings.
“Hello?”
Helen couldn’t speak.
The voice said:
“Helen?”
That was all it took.
Forty years disappeared for one second.
Helen whispered:
“Nora.”
