Mia Kept Saying the Dog “Brought Her a Secret” — Then the Hallway Camera Showed Where It Really Came From
Chapter 7 — Why Nora Came to the House
Nora had returned to town for one reason.
Her granddaughter was getting married nearby.
She learned Helen still lived in the same area.
For several days, Nora debated contacting her.
Then she found the old backstage cassette while clearing boxes.
“I thought maybe you’d finally hear what I couldn’t make you hear then.”
Helen closed her eyes.
“Why didn’t you knock?”
Nora laughed sadly.
“I did.”
The hallway recording contained more than they originally watched.
Claire pulled it up again.
At 1:42 PM, Nora approached the front door.
She knocked once.
Then twice.
No answer.
Helen had been upstairs showering.
Claire and Mia were in the back room.
Nora waited almost a minute.
Then reached toward the mail slot.
But the envelope was too thick.
So she pushed it beneath the slightly open storm door.
It slid under the hallway cabinet.
Buddy heard it.
Retrieved it.
Carried it straight to Mia.
“So she wasn’t sneaking in?” Claire asked.
Helen shook her head.
“No.”
Nora had not entered the house.
She had simply been too afraid to knock a third time.
Helen understood that fear.
After all, she had spent forty years being equally afraid of making one phone call.
Nora said:
“I didn’t know if you’d tear it up.”
Helen whispered:
“I probably would have when we were eighteen.”
Nora laughed.
“I know.”
Then silence.
Finally Helen said:
“Would you come back?”
