Mia Kept Saying the Dog “Brought Her a Secret” — Then the Hallway Camera Showed Where It Really Came From

Chapter 4 — What Happened Before Nora Walked on Stage

Claire found an old cassette player in Helen’s storage room.

They sat around the kitchen table.

Mia colored quietly nearby.

Buddy slept beneath her chair.

Claire pressed play.

Static filled the room.

Then teenage voices.

Someone was interviewing contestants backstage.

A young producer asked:

“Where’s your partner?”

Nora’s voice answered:

“She’s at the hospital with her dad.”

Helen’s eyes filled instantly.

The producer asked:

“So you’re performing solo?”

Nora replied:

“I don’t want to.”

Then another adult voice entered.

Competition director Raymond Pike.

“If you withdraw now, the song is disqualified.”

Nora said:

“It’s Helen’s melody too.”

Raymond responded:

“Helen isn’t registered as a performing finalist because she didn’t check in.”

Nora argued.

She asked whether Helen could still be credited.

Raymond said the paperwork had already closed.

Then came the sentence Helen had never heard.

Nora said:

“Then announce that she wrote it with me.”

Raymond answered:

“We’ll handle the credits afterward.”

The recording continued.

Nora reluctantly walked onto the stage.

She performed Blue December.

She won.

Helen stared at the cassette player.

“She tried to put my name on it.”

Claire nodded.

“Sounds like it.”

Helen closed her eyes.

Forty years of anger had just developed its first crack.
