The competition required an original song.
Helen wrote the melody.
Nora wrote most of the lyrics.
Together they created:

Helen still remembered every note.
“We rehearsed it for months.”
Then, three days before the competition, Helen’s father suffered a minor stroke.
Helen stayed with him at the hospital.
Nora promised she would withdraw from the event.
Instead, Nora performed.
Alone.
She won.
The newspaper headline read:
NORA BENNETT WINS STATE YOUTH SONG CONTEST WITH ORIGINAL COMPOSITION
Helen saw the article in the hospital cafeteria.
“She didn’t even call me first.”
Claire asked:
“Did you call her?”
Helen laughed bitterly.
“I threw away every letter she sent.”
When Nora came to the house, Helen refused to see her.
When Nora called, Helen’s mother said Helen wasn’t available.
Nora eventually stopped trying.
Months later, she moved to California.
“And you never spoke again?”
Helen shook her head.
“Not once.”
Claire looked toward the envelope.
“Until today.”
Helen stared at it.
“Maybe.”
She opened it.
Inside was an old cassette tape.
And one handwritten card.

Below that:

A phone number appeared underneath.
Claire picked up the cassette.
