Chapter 2 — The Man Behind the Shelf
Megan immediately crouched beside Caleb.
“What man?”
Caleb looked toward the garage door.
“He was looking for something.”
Ryan’s face tightened.
“Did he touch you?”
“No.”
“Did he talk to you?”
Caleb nodded.
The little boy explained that he had come into the garage to play.
At first, he thought he was alone.
Then he heard something behind the shelving unit.
A man stepped out.
He wore a gray work jacket.
He seemed surprised to see Caleb.
Then he smiled.
“I’m fixing something for your dad.”
Caleb believed him.
For several minutes, the man searched through boxes.
Then he pointed toward Caleb’s toy truck.
“Go play over there, okay?”
Caleb moved away.
Shortly afterward, the box fell.
The man ran through the side door.
“And he told you not to tell us?” Megan asked.
Caleb nodded.
“He said Daddy knew.”
Ryan stood.
“I didn’t.”
He walked toward the side entrance.
The door was unlocked.
That bothered him.
Ryan always locked it before leaving for work.
Megan looked back at the recording.
“Can we see his face?”
They rewound further.
At 3:41 PM, the side door opened.
The man entered.
For two seconds, his face was visible.
Megan zoomed in.
Ryan stopped breathing.
“No.”
Megan looked at him.
“You know him?”
Ryan stared at the screen.
“That’s my brother.”
“Your brother?”
Ryan nodded.
“Jason.”
Megan had been married to Ryan for eight years.
She had never met anyone named Jason.
