Caleb Nearly Got Hit by a Falling Garage Box — Then the Security Camera Showed Someone Had Moved It on Purpose

Chapter 9 — Jason Apologizes to Caleb

Ryan did not invite Jason back into the house immediately.

First, Jason had to speak to Caleb.

They met in the backyard.

Caleb stayed beside Megan.

Jason crouched several feet away.

“I’m sorry I scared you.”

Caleb looked at him.

“You made the box fall.”

Jason nodded.

“I did.”

“Why?”

“I was trying to pull something from behind it.”

“You almost squished my car.”

Jason smiled slightly.

“I know.”

“And me.”

Jason’s smile vanished.

“Yes.”

He looked directly at Caleb.

“That’s why I’m sorry.”

Caleb thought for a moment.

“Why did you run?”

Jason answered honestly.

“Because I knew I had done something wrong by coming into the garage without asking, and I got scared.”

Caleb looked toward Ryan.

“Is he really your brother?”

Ryan nodded.

“Yeah.”

“Then he’s my uncle?”

“Yeah.”

Caleb looked back at Jason.

“You should’ve knocked.”

Megan turned away to hide a smile.

Jason nodded seriously.

“You’re absolutely right.”

Then Caleb asked the question that hurt Ryan most.

“Why have I never seen him before?”

Ryan sat down beside his son.

“Because your uncle and I stopped talking a long time ago.”

“Why?”

Ryan glanced toward Jason.

“Because I thought I knew something that turned out to be more complicated than I understood.”

Jason said nothing.

But for the first time in fifteen years, the brothers sat beside each other without arguing.
