Caleb Nearly Got Hit by a Falling Garage Box — Then the Security Camera Showed Someone Had Moved It on Purpose
Chapter 3 — The Brother Megan Never Knew About
They moved Caleb inside before continuing.
Ryan locked every door.
Then Megan stood across from him in the kitchen.
“You have a brother?”
Ryan nodded.
“Older brother.”
“And you never mentioned him?”
Ryan looked ashamed.
“We haven’t spoken in fifteen years.”
“Why?”
Ryan hesitated.
“Because of my father.”
Ryan’s father, Thomas, had owned a small construction business.
Jason worked with him.
Ryan didn’t.
He went to college and eventually moved away.
Then Thomas died unexpectedly.
Afterward, the family discovered the construction company was nearly bankrupt.
Hundreds of thousands of dollars were missing.
Several creditors claimed Jason had been moving money out of the business.
Jason denied it.
Ryan didn’t believe him.
Neither did their mother.
A vicious argument followed.
Jason left.
Within months, he disappeared from the family’s life completely.
Megan looked toward the garage.
“And now he’s inside our house searching boxes?”
Ryan nodded slowly.
Then he looked at the box that had fallen.
“Not random boxes.”
Megan frowned.
“What?”
“That box came from Dad’s storage unit.”
After Thomas died, Ryan’s mother kept several boxes of his papers.
When she moved into assisted living, Ryan brought them home.
He never opened most of them.
Megan stared at him.
“Jason came here for something your father left behind.”
Ryan nodded.
Then Caleb appeared in the doorway holding a piece of paper.
“Daddy?”
Ryan turned.
“Where did you get that?”
“It fell out of the box.”
Ryan took it.
Across the top was his father’s handwriting.
One sentence had been circled three times.
