Ryan stopped speaking.
Megan knew immediately who it was.
“Jason?” Ryan said.
The voice answered:
“Yeah.”
Ryan’s anger returned.
“You entered my house.”
“I entered the garage.”
“My son was there.”
Jason went silent.
“I didn’t know.”
“A box nearly hit him.”
“I saw.”
“And you ran.”
Jason’s voice dropped.
“I panicked.”
Ryan gripped the phone.
“What did you take?”
“Proof.”
“Of what?”
“That Dad knew I didn’t steal from him.”
Ryan laughed bitterly.
“We’ve already been through this.”
“No. You decided what happened fifteen years ago and stopped listening.”
Ryan looked toward the black ledger.
“Then explain it.”
Jason took a breath.
The money missing from Thomas’s construction company had supposedly been transferred to fake subcontractors.
Several checks carried Jason’s initials.
That became the foundation of the accusation against him.
But Jason claimed Thomas discovered something shortly before his death.
The checks had been entered into the accounting system after Jason had already left the company.
“Who entered them?” Ryan asked.
“Dad’s accountant.”
Ryan knew the name.
Mark Ellison.
Mark had worked with Thomas for almost twenty years.
He was practically family.
After Thomas died, Mark was also the person who told everyone Jason had taken the money.
“Why would Mark frame you?”
Jason answered:
“Because he was the one stealing it.”
Ryan shook his head.
“You have proof?”
Jason paused.
“I do now.”
