Chapter 7 — The Storage Receipt
Thomas’s notes mentioned a storage unit.
Unit 118.
Ryan had never heard of it.
Neither had Jason.
But the envelope contained an old rental receipt.
Remarkably, the storage company still existed.
The unit had remained paid through an automatic account connected to Thomas’s estate.
Ryan’s mother had never noticed the small annual charge.
After producing estate documents, Ryan received access.
Inside Unit 118 were four filing cabinets.
And an old desktop computer.
Jason stared.
“Dad moved his records here.”
They opened the first cabinet.
Invoices.
Bank copies.
Cancelled checks.
Then Megan found a folder marked:
ELLISON.
Inside were photocopies of checks supposedly authorized by Jason.
Beside them were employment schedules.
Some checks had been processed weeks after Jason stopped working at the company.
More importantly, one check supposedly signed by Jason was dated while he was hospitalized after a motorcycle accident.
Hospital records confirmed it.
Ryan stared at the document.
“He couldn’t have signed this.”
Jason gave a bitter laugh.
“That’s what I told everyone.”
Ryan didn’t answer.
They turned on the old computer.
Most files were corrupted.
One folder opened.
Inside was a document titled:
MEETING WITH MARK — MONDAY.
Thomas had written:
I believe Mark has redirected company funds through vendors he controls. I am confronting him after I speak with the bank.
The document was dated two days before Thomas died.
