Chapter 4 — The Final Ledger
Ryan carried the broken box into the kitchen.
He and Megan sorted through everything.
Old invoices.
Employee records.
Photographs of construction sites.
Tax documents.
Then Megan found a black accounting ledger.
The cover was marked:
1998–2001.
Ryan stared at it.
Those were the final years of his father’s company.
He opened the book.
Most entries looked ordinary.
Materials.
Payroll.
Equipment rentals.
Then several pages near the back were missing.
Carefully torn out.
Megan looked at Ryan.
“Were they already gone?”
“I have no idea.”
Caleb sat quietly at the table.
Then he pointed toward the garage.
“The man had papers.”
Ryan immediately turned.
“Jason took something?”
Caleb nodded.
“He put them in his coat.”
Ryan returned to the security footage.
He found the moment.
Jason opened the fallen box before Caleb entered.
He removed several folded documents.
Then began searching the higher shelf.
What had fallen near Caleb was apparently a second box Jason was trying to reach.
It had shifted while he pulled something behind it.
Megan looked at Ryan.
“He didn’t push it toward Caleb.”
Ryan nodded.
That mattered.
Jason had behaved recklessly.
But the recording showed he hadn’t deliberately tried to hurt the boy.
He had been pulling a smaller file box from behind the larger one.
The big box lost balance.
Jason saw it tipping.
He even lunged forward.
Too late.
Then panic took over.
He ran.
Megan looked at Ryan.
“We need to know what he took.”
Ryan agreed.
Then his phone rang.
Unknown number.
He answered.
A familiar voice said:
“You finally opened Dad’s box.”
