Chapter 7 — The Missing Deposit
Mark opened the cash cabinet.
One deposit envelope was missing.
Exactly as the camera suggested.
He immediately called the restaurant owner.
Then police.
Rachel looked toward Lucas.
“We’re going home.”
Lucas nodded.
But before they left, Mark asked Rachel for her contact information.
“Why?”
“Because you and Lucas witnessed the conversation with Jason and the security footage.”
Rachel agreed.
As they headed toward the door, Jason stopped them.
He handed Lucas a fresh soda.
With a lid.
Lucas looked at him.
“Smart.”
Jason laughed.
“I’m learning.”
By evening, police had obtained copies of the security footage.
Denise’s phone went unanswered.
Eric’s did too.
Investigators found Denise’s car abandoned behind a shopping center.
At first it appeared she had fled.
Then officers checked another camera.
A parking-lot security system showed Denise climbing into Eric’s pickup truck.
The truck left the city heading north.
Two hours later, state police stopped it.
Inside they found the missing restaurant deposit.
But they also found something else.
A folder labeled:
