Sophie Came Home With a Note Saying “DON’T TELL DAD” — Then Daniel Opened the Kitchen Cabinet
Chapter 9 — Daniel and Rachel
That night, after Sophie went to bed, Daniel and Rachel remained in the kitchen.
The yellow note still sat on the counter.
DON’T TELL DAD.
Daniel picked it up.
Rachel looked down.
“I’m sorry.”
Daniel didn’t answer immediately.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
Rachel took a breath.
“Because I knew you were worried about money.”
Daniel’s construction business had lost several contracts that winter.
They weren’t struggling badly.
But things were tighter than usual.
Rachel knew he would never tell her to stop helping hungry children.
That was exactly why she kept it secret.
“You would’ve said yes,” she whispered.
Daniel frowned.
“Yes to what?”
“To spending more.”
“Rachel—”
“Even if we couldn’t afford it.”
Daniel understood.
But he still looked at the note.
“Don’t ever make Sophie responsible for keeping secrets between us.”
Rachel nodded immediately.
“I know.”
“She thought she couldn’t tell me what she saw at school.”
Rachel’s eyes filled.
“I know.”
Daniel softened.
“Helping those families wasn’t wrong.”
He slid the yellow paper toward her.
“This part was.”
Rachel nodded.
“You’re right.”
They sat silently for several seconds.
Then Daniel looked toward the pantry.
“How much food are we supposed to deliver tomorrow?”
Rachel looked surprised.
“Daniel.”
“I’m asking.”
She smiled through tears.
“Seven containers.”
Daniel stood.
“Then we’re going to need a bigger shelf.”
