Sophie Came Home With a Note Saying “DON’T TELL DAD” — Then Daniel Opened the Kitchen Cabinet
Chapter 5 — What Sophie Saw
Rachel stared at her daughter.
“When?”
“Yesterday.”
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
Sophie looked toward the yellow note.
“You said not to tell Dad.”
Rachel’s face fell.
Daniel said nothing.
Rachel understood immediately.
She had meant the pantry.
Sophie thought she meant everything.
Daniel crouched beside her.
“Sweetheart, tell us what you saw.”
Sophie explained.
After school the previous afternoon, she had forgotten her art folder.
She returned toward her classroom.
Near the cafeteria loading entrance, she saw Principal Thomas Reed and another man moving cardboard food boxes onto a van.
Sophie recognized the boxes.
They had the supermarket’s donation stickers across the sides.
“What man?” Rachel asked.
Sophie shrugged.
“The one from the restaurant.”
Daniel frowned.
“What restaurant?”
“The place where Grandma had her birthday.”
Rachel looked at Daniel.
They both remembered.
Harrison’s Grill.
A local restaurant owned by a man named Kevin Blake.
Daniel knew Kevin casually.
They had spoken at neighborhood events.
“You’re sure it was him?”
Sophie nodded.
“He had the same red van.”
Rachel’s expression changed.
“Red van?”
“Yeah.”
Rachel stood abruptly.
“I’ve seen that van behind the school.”
Daniel looked at her.
“How many times?”
“At least four.”
The donated food wasn’t simply disappearing.
Someone was taking it somewhere else.
Daniel pulled out his phone.
“We need proof before we accuse anybody.”
Sophie looked at him.
“I have proof.”
