Daniel didn’t confront anyone.
Instead, he made copies of Sophie’s video.
One went to his email.
One went to Rachel.

Then they contacted school board investigator Maria Lopez.
Maria arrived at their house that evening.
She watched the video three times.
“How long has this been happening?” she asked.
Rachel showed her the notebook.
Missing boxes.
Families who received nothing.
Dates when the red van appeared.
Maria wrote everything down.
Then she asked a surprising question.
“Does Harrison’s Grill advertise community meals?”
Daniel nodded.
“Every Wednesday.”
The restaurant had recently earned praise for providing low-cost family meal boxes.
Local newspapers had even written about it.
Rachel stared at Maria.

The next morning, investigators purchased several of those meal boxes.
Inside were packaged products.
Same brands.
Same lot numbers.
And on one juice multipack, somebody had failed to remove the original sticker.

The food intended for struggling school families was being taken to Harrison’s Grill.
Then sold.
Investigators contacted FreshWay Market.
The company supplied delivery records.
During the previous four months, more than $18,000 worth of food had been donated to Sophie’s school.
Distribution records accounted for less than half.
Rachel stared at the total.
“All those families…”
Maria nodded.
“Someone has been making money from food intended for them.”
But there was something even worse.
The paperwork authorizing every donation pickup contained the same signature.
