Chapter 3 — Rachel’s Explanation
Rachel sat down at the kitchen table.
Daniel remained standing.
“Start talking.”
Rachel looked toward Sophie.
“She shouldn’t have been involved.”
“Then why does she have a note telling her not to tell me?”
Rachel flinched.
“That note wasn’t supposed to scare her.”
“It did.”
Daniel placed it on the table.
“Who wrote it?”
Rachel hesitated.
“I did.”
Daniel stared at her.
“You told our daughter to keep something from me?”
“I asked her not to mention the food yet.”
“Why?”
Rachel rubbed both hands together.
“Because I knew you’d ask questions.”
Daniel almost laughed.
“You’re right.”
He pointed toward the pantry.
“What is going on?”
Rachel finally explained.
Three months earlier, she had begun volunteering at Sophie’s elementary school.
At first, she helped with reading groups.
Then one afternoon, she noticed a boy named Eli hiding food from the cafeteria inside his backpack.
Rachel assumed he was saving it for later.
She was wrong.
He was taking it home for his younger sister.
Rachel quietly spoke with the school counselor.
That’s when she learned the problem was much larger.
Several families in the district were struggling.
Some had recently lost jobs.
Some were living in motels.
Others earned slightly too much to qualify for certain assistance programs but still couldn’t afford enough groceries.
“So you started feeding them?” Daniel asked.
Rachel nodded.
“At first, just Eli’s family.”
“And then?”
“People found out.”
Daniel looked toward the containers.
“How many families?”
Rachel didn’t answer immediately.
“Nine.”
Daniel stared at her.
“Nine families?”
“Some weeks more.”
He looked around the kitchen.
“And you’ve been buying all this?”
Rachel nodded.
“Mostly.”
Daniel’s anger shifted into confusion.
“Why hide it from me?”
Rachel’s eyes filled with tears.
“Because some of the money wasn’t ours.”
