Chapter 6 — The Second Person Who Knew
Aaron explained what happened six months earlier.
He had already begun suspecting Colin when he installed Rachel’s system.
That afternoon, Colin unexpectedly arrived at the Mitchell house.
He claimed he was conducting a routine quality inspection.
Aaron became nervous.
The memory cards containing his evidence were inside his work bag.
He feared Colin would search it.
So while installing the nursery camera, Aaron temporarily hid the pouch behind the loose baseboard.
He planned to retrieve it later.
Then he was fired three days afterward.
His company credentials were revoked.
He never returned.
“For six months?” Michael asked.
Aaron nodded.
He believed the evidence was safest where nobody knew it existed.
Then last week, Aaron contacted a former coworker named Eric Lawson.
He trusted Eric.
He told him about the hidden cards and asked whether he could help retrieve them legally by contacting Rachel.
Instead, Eric apparently told Colin.
Two days later, Colin called Aaron.
“What did he say?” Hayes asked.
Aaron looked toward Rachel.
“He said, ‘I know where you left it.’”
Colin threatened to accuse Aaron of planting surveillance equipment inside customers’ homes.
He also claimed he would tell police Aaron was responsible for every burglary.
Aaron panicked.
He still possessed an old maintenance code he knew Northstar had failed to deactivate.
“So you used it.”
“Yes.”
“And entered a home with a baby inside.”
Aaron looked ashamed.
“I thought nobody was home.”
“Jasmine was.”
“I know that now.”
Aaron explained that he waited outside until he saw Jasmine leave the nursery.
He believed she was leaving the house.
He slipped upstairs.
Retrieved the pouch.
Then heard Rachel return.
He dropped his screwdriver.
Panicked.
And left the pouch behind when he heard footsteps.
“Why were you standing exactly outside the camera’s face coverage?” Rachel asked.
Aaron gave a grim answer.
“Because I installed it.”
