Rachel Thought the Nanny Had Been Near Her Baby’s Crib — Then the Monitor Recorded Someone Hiding in the Camera’s Blind Spot
Chapter 3 — Behind the Changing Table
The next morning, police allowed Rachel and Michael back into the nursery.
Nothing obvious appeared stolen.
The baby’s clothes were untouched.
Drawers closed.
Jewelry elsewhere in the house remained exactly where it belonged.
Then Michael pulled the changing table away from the wall.
One small section of baseboard had been loosened.
Rachel stared at it.
“That wasn’t like that before.”
An officer removed the trim carefully.
Behind it was a narrow cavity.
Something had been taped inside.
A small gray pouch.
Rachel looked at Michael.
“That’s not ours.”
Police opened it.
Inside were three microSD cards.
A folded photograph.
And a handwritten list containing six street addresses.
Michael read the first.
“That’s us.”
The second address was only two neighborhoods away.
The remaining homes were scattered across the county.
Beside several addresses were dates.
Rachel felt cold.
“Why was this hidden in our baby’s room?”
The officer turned over the photograph.
It showed Aaron standing beside another Northstar employee.
The second man was older.
Balding.
Expensive watch.
Northstar identification badge.
On the back, Aaron had written:
COLIN KNOWS ABOUT ALL SIX.
Michael frowned.
“Who’s Colin?”
Rachel recognized the name.
Colin Ward.
The regional manager who had personally apologized to her on the phone the night before.
