Chapter 2 — The Security Installer
Rachel remembered his name.
Aaron Blake.
He had worked for Northstar Home Security.
Aaron installed the nursery camera, hallway sensor, and two exterior cameras when Rachel and her husband, Michael, upgraded the system.
During installation, Northstar technicians wore orange access bands.
Rachel had joked that they looked like concert wristbands.
Jasmine looked alarmed.
“Why would your security installer be inside the house?”
Rachel immediately called Michael.
He was still at work.
“Don’t touch anything,” he said.
“I’m calling police.”
Rachel locked herself, Jasmine, and the baby in the downstairs den.
Officers arrived within minutes.
The house was searched.
No intruder remained.
The rear utility door showed no damage.
No broken lock.
No open window.
Someone had apparently entered without forcing anything.
An officer checked the electronic access log.
At 6:14 PM, the utility door had been opened using a maintenance code.
Rachel stared at him.
“We don’t have a maintenance code.”
“Your security company does.”
Rachel called Northstar.
The manager became quiet when she mentioned Aaron Blake.
“Mrs. Mitchell, Aaron doesn’t work here anymore.”
“Since when?”
“Four months ago.”
“Why was he fired?”
The manager hesitated.
“I can’t discuss personnel details.”
Rachel looked toward the officer.
“Then discuss why a former employee’s code still opens my house.”
That changed the conversation.
Northstar promised an immediate investigation.
Then one of the officers returned from upstairs carrying a clear evidence bag.
Inside was a small screwdriver.
He had found it beside the changing table.
Jasmine frowned.
“What was he doing down there?”
The officer looked toward Rachel.
“That’s what we’re going to find out.”
