Chapter 9 — Victoria Corrects the Story in Front of Everyone
Victoria stood after Oliver finished.
At first James thought she might try to continue the program normally.
Instead, she walked toward the table.
“Oliver.”
He looked at her.
“I owe you an apology.”
The room became quiet.
Victoria did not ask to speak with him privately.
She understood why that would be wrong.
The humiliation had happened in front of everyone sitting there.
The correction needed witnesses too.
“Your seat was assigned.”
She looked toward the place card beside his plate.
“I removed it.”
Then:
“I told you there wasn’t enough room.”
“That was not true.”
Oliver listened.
Victoria continued.
“There was enough physical room.”
“I chose not to add another chair because I was more concerned with how the dinner looked and with impressing an important guest.”
Preston Vale said nothing.
Victoria looked toward Oliver again.
“Then I asked you to serve food to everyone else.”
“I told myself I was teaching you to be helpful.”
“But I was really asking you to accept being treated as less important because it made my plan easier.”
James watched carefully.

I’m sorry you felt embarrassed.
No:
Things got hectic.
No:
I was only trying to help the charity.
Victoria named the decision.
“I’m sorry.”
Oliver stared at her for several seconds.
Then nodded once.
He did not have to say:
It’s okay.
Because it had not been okay.
